Introduction

Tongue tie

A short tongue frenulum or tie (the tissue that connects the base of the tongue to the floor of the mouth) can restrict tongue movement, potentially affecting speech, swallowing, and other oral functions. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon can perform a frenectomy, a simple procedure to release the frenulum. This helps improve tongue mobility, thereby enhancing its function and potentially aiding in clearer speech and better oral coordination.

Lip tie

A short upper lip frenulum or tie (the tissue that connects the upper lip to the gum) can cause a central diastema, a gap between the upper front teeth. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon can perform a frenectomy, a straightforward procedure to release the frenulum. This helps close the gap and promotes a more balanced smile.

What to expect after surgery

After your surgical procedure, your maxillofacial surgeon and orthodontist will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions. You may experience some swelling, discomfort, or mild pain, which can be managed with prescribed medications and proper care. Your surgeon might schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress and ensure the best outcomes.
